In the following article types of main memory of computer are described which is given as primary and secondary memory and CPU RAM along with their examples and characteristics.

Primary and Secondary memory:

When we make use of computer at the time we always think about the memory of computer.

To do fast work, we need memory of computer so computer making companies are focus on memory space in computer.

Computer memory is a system which is used to store information required in various parts of computer. Memory is an important part of computer; memory is placed at motherboard of computer. The main function of memory is to collect data and various instructions.

When we are using computer we should know about the memory of computer, its specification, storage space and its types.

Types of memory:

There are two types of memory mainly used in computer:

  1. Primary Memory
  2. Secondary Memory
  3. Cache Memory

1. Primary Memory:

It is called as the main memory of Computer.

It is most important memory of computer, without this memory we cannot start the computer.

This memory is faster than secondary memory.

This is closer to CPU.

All data required for processing of CPU is present in the primary memory.

It is divided into two types:

a. Random access memory

b. Read only memory

a. Random access memory (RAM):

It is also called as temporary memory or volatile means which is not permanent.

If you are doing some work, at sudden time if your personal computer gets switched off, such time you’re all data will be erased. You cannot get it back. It is required to improve your processor performance.

At the time of purchase if your machine is having less RAM at that time you will extend it by attaching it to motherboard of a processor.

It is having two types: Static RAM and Dynamic RAM.

b. Read Only Memory (ROM):

It is also called as permanent memory or non-volatile memory.

As name suggests it is used read only purpose, if your machine gets switched off, the data on this memory will not erased.

It is having two types: PROM (Programmable ROM), EPROM (Erasable PROM).

2. Secondary Memory:

This is external memory of PC.

This memory is slower and expensive as compared to primary memory.

These are the external devices connected to the computer with the help of port or cables.

This produces extra memory to the computer so it is termed as secondary memory.

We can carry these memory devices anywhere so it is called as portable memory.

The data from secondary memory cannot be accessed directly to the CPU, but at first this data is loaded into primary memory.

The secondary memory data is stored in Gigabyte (GB), Tetrabyte (TB) and Megabyte (MB).

There are various devices used for secondary memory like: Pen drive, Hard disk, optical drive, magnetic tape, CD, etc.

3. Cache Memory:

This is semiconductor memory.

This is work as buffer memory, which helps in faster execution.

This memory is expensive than the primary memory.
